Greg: Mozilla fixed the Firefox issue last year. Now it is only Chrome that has the bug. It is very frustrating (hey, we use Chrome too!), but it's something that Google must fix. It affects all text expansion software and any other app that must observe keyboard input.

I am also having the "Expansion Disabled" bug in Chrome with Text Expander. This is really frustrating. The workaround "quit and reload" seems to work, but I also lose the half dozen or more tabs I had open when I do that, and I then must go hunting through history to restore all the research I had open in various windows and tabs. Since this is now happening in both Firefox and Chrome (as documented in the above posts) and since it has been going on for quite some time (years?), I was hoping for an update or alternative strategy to deal with this (hopefully a strategy that might not involve waiting till the next ice age for open source bug reports to be acted on)? :) All best, your faithful fan, Greg Gehr.

Most likely, something on your system is prompting you for a password. If you're able to find that request and dismiss it, that should be the end to the problem. TextExpander does its best to identify the process but cannot always do so. For more information on secure input and how it affects your system, including all text expansion software, please see here:

I have to say ... I've been using and loving TE for a couple of years now, and finally had a bit of extra money to buy a licensed copy. I've had no problems at all. Just licensed my copy, and now I'm only getting the "Expansion Disabled (loginwindow)" error almost all the time. Still trying to find the source of it, but it seems to be Chrome.

Had I known this, I wouldn't have plopped down $40 yesterday, I'm sorry to say.

Comment on AppleScript and Shell Script Snippet Issues in TextExpander 3.3 by Greg

Yes, the first issue has been fixed. You can confirm this by making a new snippet, setting the Content: to AppleScript using the popup over the snippet editor, setting the snippet to a super-simple script such as: return "Hello", then setting the abbreviation. Switch from TextExpander to an application into which you can enter text, such as TextEdit, then type your abbreviation.

If your AppleScript snippet does not compile properly or encounters an error, then indeed the script itself will be what gets expanded. If there's error information TextExpander can write to the Console, it does. Often this information is not clear. Generally, if you can get your script to run in Script Editor first, then it should run when copied and pasted into TextExpander, provided you've set the Content: to AppleScript.

If you're having further trouble, please <a href="mailto:support@smilesoftware.com?subject=TextExpander%20Support%20(Blog)" rel="nofollow">contact us</a> for fast and friendly support.

Hi all.

Has the first issue actually been fixed? I am using the most up to date release of TextExpander and my AppleScripts are still only returning the contents of the script and not the results.

Any help?

mooncaine: That's not possible in the current version of TextExpander, but we'll had that to our feature requests list. Thanks for the feedback.

Is there a way to make a dialog pop up that asks me to input a date, and a number of days to subtract? That way, I could trigger the snippet, input a date, input a number of days, and get the date from, for example, exactly 28 days before the date I typed in as input.

Extremely cool feature! ... (Suggestion for those implementing it: Don't change the name of the group as the AppleScript is looking for that specific name. Changing it would require some tweaking of the AppleScript.)
